Elephants are present in Udawalawe National Park, Yala National Park, Lunugamvehera National Park, Wilpattu National Park and Minneriya National Park but also live outside protected areas. It is estimated that Sri Lanka has the highest density of elephants in Asia.
One of the big tourist draws to Yala are the quantity of free roaming Asian Elephant family groups. In the morning and late afternoon you will see them at watering holes. If you are in a small group find a small pond and park up. The Yala National Park is famous among visitors as the best place to view large mammals within one territory.
